The Katsina Times has received complaints from primary school teachers in Katsina State regarding a direct deduction of three thousand naira from their June salaries.

The teachers lamented that they were informed the deducted funds were to be used for computer training. They explained that only a few teachers were gathered and given a brief one-and-a-half-hour session on computer use, after which it was declared that the training was complete and their three thousand naira had been spent.

The teachers stated that those who attended the training reported that there was nothing substantial to learn from the session. They added that most of the computers were not functional, and the teachers were simply told to leave after a short while.

They compared the training to a children's play, reminiscent of activities from twenty years ago. The teachers also complained that their opinions were not sought on whether they needed the training, let alone consent to the salary deduction.

The teachers accused the head of the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) of failing to bring any meaningful progress since assuming office. An investigation by the Katsina Times revealed that a private company was awarded millions of naira to conduct the training for the primary school teachers.

However, the investigation found that the training was flawed and did not justify the deductions from the teachers’ salaries. The supposed training would not benefit the teachers or improve their teaching skills.

We reached out to the spokesperson for the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Badaru Jikamshi, who informed us that they were aware of these complaints. He added that they had invited the training coordinator for discussions and would soon issue a statement on the matter.
